Abandon Ship

In the premiere of Naked and Afraid: Shipwrecked, twelve veteran survivalists arrive in the Philippines believing they are beginning a 35-day challenge, only to discover the real twist: they are being shipwrecked at sea in total darkness. The teams are split across four boats: Boat 1 (Shawn Bretschneider, Patrick French, Allison Frueh), Boat 2 (Ana Lis Pitter, Darrin Reay, Malu Beyonce), Boat 3 (Jamie Frizzell, Dani Beau, Jarrell Banks), and Boat 4 (Jonny Yates, Adam Kavanagh, Amanda Wilson).

As alarms blare and the order comes to abandon ship, the survivalists must grab whatever they can, jump into the dark water, and make their way toward shore with only lifesavers and limited gear. The waters around the northern Philippines are dangerous even in daylight, with shark-infested seas, shipwrecks, uninhabited islands, sea kraits, and dense jungle waiting beyond the beach.

The night insertion immediately becomes chaotic. Boat 2 (Ana Lis, Darrin, Malu) struggles to see anything, and Ana Lis is bitten while floating in the water. Boat 3 (Jamie, Dani, Jarrell) decides to wait for sunrise rather than risk swimming blindly through deep water where hammerheads and tiger sharks hunt at night. Boat 1 (Shawn, Patrick, Allison) is disoriented and cannot hear shore, while Boat 4 (Jonny, Adam, Amanda) spots a sea snake and waits anxiously for daylight.

As morning comes, the survivors finally reach land. Malu reveals she cannot really swim, despite taking “online” swimming lessons and practicing in bed, while Dani, a 100-pound vegetarian who dislikes the ocean, faces an immediate nightmare scenario. Darrin naturally steps into a leadership role, drawing on his survival experience and confidence from winning Last One Standing.

The teams discover that each boat has salvaged only one quarter of a map, meaning they will eventually need to unite to see the full picture. Day one quickly becomes a race to find fresh water along a sharp lava-rock coastline.

Boat 2 (Ana Lis, Darrin, Malu) finds coconuts to keep them going temporarily and discovers the remains of an old shelter with rusty nails. Communication proves difficult as Ana Lis, from Argentina, struggles to understand her teammates. Darrin wants to focus on finding water, but the women push for a raised sleeping platform to escape the bugs. Ana Lis later discovers an old cemetery with three wooden crosses, adding an eerie feel to the island.

Boat 1 (Shawn, Patrick, Allison) has better luck locating a freshwater spring. Patrick digs into the stream with a piece of bamboo to collect water while the team works to start a fire for boiling. Patrick quickly becomes frustrated with what he sees as his teammates' lack of survival experience, especially after Shawn starts a fire near the incoming tide.

Boat 4 (Jonny, Adam, Amanda) discovers a large abandoned shelter complete with rusty nails and a creepy wooden mask. Amanda, nervous to be without Ernie Hinojos after completing her previous two challenges with him, successfully gets a fire going. Adam and Jonny search upstream after finding brackish water, hoping to locate a fresher source. While salvaging materials from the old shelter, Amanda badly cuts her thumb down to the bone with a knife and requires treatment from the medics. Jonny, an Army veteran, brings a calm, methodical survival mindset to the group.

Boat 3 (Jamie, Dani, Jarrell) struggles the most. In 92-degree heat, Jamie cuts through thick jungle searching for a spring, but the team finds no water. They eventually discover an abandoned shelter, though Jarrell dislikes the location. After a miserable night with relentless bugs, Boat 3 wakes on day two to find a black-and-yellow snake in camp that they fear could be a deadly cobra. With no fresh water and little confidence in their camp, they decide to leave the beach and relocate. Rather than cut across the dangerous jungle, they lash their life preservers together into a makeshift raft and attempt a risky two-mile swim around the bend to a new beach.

Elsewhere, tensions continue to grow. Patrick refuses to spend valuable energy building a shelter, preferring to cowboy camp beside a fire while exploring and fishing instead. Allison, whose previous challenge was with Steven Lee Hall Jr., argues that the team needs proper shelter. On Boat 2, Malu is exhausted after getting almost no sleep and admits she abandoned the shelter during the night to sleep on the beach. She has little interest in hiking inland for water, instead wanting to make shoes to protect her feet from snakes and sharp rocks.

Darrin pushes ahead anyway, following two dry riverbeds inland in hopes of finding their source. Ana Lis complains throughout the difficult hike but manages to keep up, and the pair eventually finds water. The problem is distance: the walk is too long to make the source practical for daily use. Ana Lis drinks immediately, while Darrin cautions her about drinking without boiling. Back at camp, Malu gathers palm fronds for the roof, chopping away despite growing thirst and worrying about how long her teammates have been gone.

Boat 4 deals with its own problems as Amanda’s injured thumb continues to hurt. Adam heads out hunting with the Hawaiian sling while Jonny assists, and Adam finds a large aquatic hermit crab. Boat 1 also turns toward food and shelter, with Patrick hunting with the sling while Shawn and Allison work on shelter and boil water. Allison searches for snails, but the surf creates another danger as waves crash Allison and Patrick into the rocks.

Boat 3 finally reaches the new beach and gets the breakthrough they needed: fresh water. But the move comes with an immediate cost when Dani is stung by a box jellyfish, adding another medical scare to an already brutal opening stretch.
