Crossbow and a Cross To Bear

On Day 29, Suzanne, Gwen, Jon, Sarah and Ryan continue without Wes as an unusual cold front approaches. Bulent is still surviving alone and prepares his camp for the drop in temperature.

Ryan continues hunting but cannot find game. Since the group has two bows but Ryan is the only experienced bow hunter, they begin working on a crossbow that could allow the others to hunt as well. Their food situation is becoming urgent when they inspect the remaining impala jerky and discover it has gone moldy.

Sarah works on fleshing the impala hide so the group can use the material for the crossbow and make shoes.

Ryan's repeated hunting failures are taking a toll. He admits that he now hates hunting because it has begun to feel like a job rather than something he enjoys. After another unsuccessful trip, he returns to camp convinced the animals are no longer coming anywhere near them.

Bulent is having food problems of his own. He has gone six days without eating and searches for insects that can be used as bait. He eventually finds a small dead bird and plans to use it on a terrapin line. A flock of migrating ducks has also taken over his watering hole. Their constant squawking keeps him awake through the night, and an unsuccessful attempt to kill one with a rock only adds to his frustration.

Back at the larger camp, Ryan's mood continues deteriorating. His teammates become concerned that his negativity and lack of motivation are affecting the entire group and even discuss the possibility of banishing him.

That night, Ryan begins sleepwalking inside the crowded boma. With the fire and several people packed into a tight space, his wandering becomes dangerous. He could easily step into the fire or onto one of his teammates, and at one point he begins interfering with the production camera.

On Day 31, Bulent wakes after getting virtually no sleep and decides it is time to relocate. Extraction is still about 12 miles away, and he chooses a water source roughly five miles closer as his next destination.

Suzanne becomes increasingly concerned that Ryan's sleepwalking and emotional withdrawal are signs that something is seriously wrong. The group holds a meeting and tells him they are worried. Ryan responds that he is no longer going to worry about anything and admits that he simply does not care anymore.

His condition continues to spiral, and producers step in for a medical evaluation. Because of the seriousness of his mental-health condition and the inability to safely treat it in the field, Ryan is medically removed from the challenge.

Meanwhile, Bulent continues his long solo migration. As the landscape becomes greener, he knows he is getting closer to water.

At the end of the episode, Bulent finally reaches the other survivalists' camp, bringing his long stretch of complete isolation to an unexpected end.
