Episode Synopsis

Kate is now alone after self-banishing and begins a four-mile trek in search of a new water source. She eventually finds water and starts scouting for a place to build a boma, but the journey leaves her exhausted. Her new water source is filthy, and she nearly vomits after drinking from it.

Back with Bulent and Makani, the two have settled into an unusual but workable partnership. Bulent still finds Makani odd, especially as she spends time doing yoga, but they have developed an understanding. Hunger is becoming a bigger problem for Makani, and despite her beliefs against killing animals, she decides she may have to eat fish to survive. She first tries catching one with her bare hands but has no luck.

Seth is still struggling with the heat and is unable to contribute much around camp. Suzanne goes fishing while Seth cools himself in the water, only to emerge covered in leeches. Suzanne has to inspect him and remove them, joking that she has essentially become his mother. Her fishing effort pays off when she catches a terrapin.

Wes and Gwen remain without a significant food source. Wes misses a shot at a bird, and the pair later receive a dangerously close visit from elephants. They burn elephant dung in hopes that the smoke will help keep the animals away.

Ryan has better luck foraging, discovering freshwater clams buried in a dry riverbed.

On Day 7, Makani finds a grasshopper and uses it as live bait, successfully catching a catfish. The victory quickly becomes emotional. She struggles to watch as Bulent guts the fish with his bare hands and cries over having killed an animal, something that goes directly against her beliefs. She eventually forces herself to try the catfish but feels sick afterward.

Bulent has no such hesitation when it comes to hunting. He encounters a rabbit and kills it with a stick, providing another potential food source for the team.

Seth begins feeling better after finally getting some food, allowing him and Suzanne to work together on improving their boma. Their progress is interrupted when they spot a leopard resting in a nearby tree. Seth wants to confront it, while Suzanne has the more cautious idea of retreating to the safety of the boma.

Wes and Gwen believe their food problems may finally be solved when they discover what appears to be an endless supply of aloe. They eat it, only to learn the hard way that the plant contains a high concentration of latex. Both become sick, and Wes begins vomiting.

The episode ends with Wes and Gwen paying the price for their risky food choice while the other teams continue adapting to hunger, heat and life in the South African bush.
