Episode Synopsis
In a first-of-its-kind challenge, returning legends Ky Furneaux and Dan Link spend two weeks on a Thai island during monsoon season with no tools at all. Their first priority is building a lean-to shelter from bamboo, palm fronds, and beach debris to protect themselves from the expected rain. Using the inner bark of beach hibiscus for strong lashings, they create a shelter and plan a gutter system to collect rainwater.
With no pot to boil water, Ky and Dan rely on coconuts for hydration, but the lack of rain forces them to shift focus from water to fire. Starting a fire without tools in the humid island environment proves extremely difficult. They try a bow drill, then a fire saw, before finally succeeding with flint percussion. Once they have fire, they look for food beyond raw coconut, which is upsetting their stomachs. Cooked hermit crabs provide calories, but not much enjoyment.
After five dry days, their bamboo water-boiling attempts fail, but the long-awaited rain finally arrives and proves their gutter system works. Rehydrated and reenergized, they turn back to food, with Dan crafting a four-prong bamboo spear to hunt crabs along the beach. After surviving the tool-less challenge through improvisation and experience, Ky and Dan build a bamboo raft and float to extraction.
