Episode Synopsis

In the dense jungles of Costa Rica, survivalists Shane Lewis and Kim Shelton face a dangerous 21-day challenge in an environment teeming with venomous snakes, insects, and other threats. The danger is made clear before the challenge even begins: an executive producer was bitten by a fer-de-lance during a scouting mission. Despite being offered the opportunity to withdraw, both survivalists choose to proceed. Shane enters with a Primitive Survival Rating (PSR) of 7.6 and a fire starter, while Kim begins with a PSR of 5.8 and a machete.

Their partnership gets off to an uneasy start. Shane's old-school attitude and habit of calling Kim "Kiddo" clash with her more independent personality. After navigating brutal terrain, encountering aggressive leafcutter ants, and nearly stepping on a fer-de-lance, they establish a campsite near a river. Without a pot to collect water, they rely on moisture from cut jungle vines and risking river water, and Kim successfully builds the first fire of the series.

Relentless rain soon turns their challenge into a miserable struggle against cold, mud, and exhaustion. With nighttime temperatures dropping to 57 degrees, Shane concentrates on shelter construction and gathering firewood while Kim focuses on finding food. Their different priorities create friction, especially as days pass without a substantial meal. On Day 9, Shane kills a small fer-de-lance, but Kim's observation about its size aggravates him. His frustration escalates into derogatory comments about women, deepening the divide between them.

By Day 13, Shane's increasingly negative attitude has pushed their partnership toward a breaking point. After slipping down a steep incline while pursuing a pig, he takes Kim's apparent lack of concern personally. Arguments over firewood and their respective contributions continue until disaster strikes on Day 14, when their shelter catches fire while Shane is sleeping inside. Although both are physically and emotionally drained and consider giving up, they rebuild. A much-needed breakthrough comes when Kim catches a turtle, providing their first significant meal and a temporary boost in morale.

Their relief is short-lived when Kim becomes violently ill, possibly from the turtle, and spends the next two days vomiting. She finally begins recovering on Day 18, just as they prepare for their grueling journey toward extraction. Spreading the trek over several days, they struggle through unforgiving jungle terrain as exhaustion and tension continue to mount. On Day 21, despite their clashes, hunger, illness, and the loss of their shelter, Shane and Kim successfully reach their extraction point and are flown out by helicopter, completing the very first Naked and Afraid challenge.
